If you consider that my recent posts here have all been about
pushing the range of an Apple Airport Express adapter, you might think I spend all my time indoors at a computer screen. But in truth, its just part of the things that keep me busy …

Of course, we have the backyard pond to maintain, and about 18 very tall trees … recently reduced by one. Thats the problem with living among old tall trees – the shade is wonderful, but even with regular watering and deep root feeding, they only live for so long. And in the 4 years we’ve lived in this home, we’ve had 4 large trees cut down. Its troubling, but on each occasion we found a huge amount of decay hidden within the trunk, so its actually a blessing to take the trees down gently at our pace, instead of waiting for them to crash down in winter, loaded with ice.

As you can see from the pictures, the last homeowner let the yard go to seed – so I’ve spent a lot of time clearing weeds and undregrowth from a lot of the yard. Somebody in the past had even filled in the little pond years ago – but I show how I got the pond set up in pictures and pages here

Its a lot of work, but its very pleasant to go sit in the chairs on a sunday morning with a nice cup of coffee and watch the birds play in the trees. Very soothing – like a vacation in our own backyard.

  1. What a lovely back yard…
I’m afraid as a town dweller that the best I have is a very small concrete yard with a very small garden. I can only dream of having a garden large enough to have trees in it.
    🙂
Is that a barn at the bottom of your yard??? What a cool thing – it looks great.

  2. Thanks for the kind words!
The grey building is a small shed, but it is barn-shaped. It holds our mower, garden tools and lawn stuff in the off season, and its home to my Triumph during the winter months.
I’d love to paint the barn with one of those geometric hex patterns you see on barns in the Amish countryside … guess thats just another project for the future (grin).

  3. ‘Triumph’??? – Bike or sports car? (Sorry – I’m a Brit so it’s always nice to hear that an American owns something like a Triumph.)
    🙂
It’s just a shed?…That’s a terrific shape for a shed. I like the sound of the Amish patterns too…A nice contrast to you other ‘high tech’ interests.
…I think I am probably a typical British male in having an inordinate facination with sheds at the bottom of the garden (it’s a bit of a national excentricity).

  4. Oh – its a Triumph 500 twin motorcycle . I’d had one years ago when I was in High School – then a Norton and later a 750 twin Triumph, then “settled down” and got into sports cars (MGB-GT)and Alfas, then toned it down later and now have my second Honda SI (not the British one) ….
Anyway – some women in our church got a pair of bikes a couple years ago, and remembered how much fun I’d had back when, and as I don’t have the budget for a new Harley (like folks at work have) … I thought I might get an older bike and
    fix it up …
tho I haven’t had time to do the last bits of fixing and get it through inspection … sigh …
tho it does run now. Not like last summer.
    Too many projects!
