Calpernia Speaks, pt 2 – or, the Deep Stealth Speaker

Well – a number of folks came to the Christ Congregational Church (UCC) in Silver Spring, Maryland Sunday night to hear Calpernia Addams speak about Welcoming Transgender Christian – they were welcoming – but Calpernia was a no show.
The Rev Todd Hunter, the pastor of that church, stepped to the pulpit about 10 after 8 and apologized, but said she’d not answered her cellphone and she’d not contacted the church to explain.
Fortunately Pat Conover (of UCC) and Roxanne (of local support group TGEA) spoke to the audience and did their best to answer questions and enlighten the listeners, but it was a bit troubling that Calpernia didn’t show. We were pretty worried about her – there have been a number of incidents of violence to T-people over the years, some transwomen were murdered in DC recently, and sometimes things happen – but she posted an apology to her weblog Monday morning (dated “Sunday Midnight”) so apparently she is ok …
Ah Well … maybe next time?
This is a continuation of the story begun in Calpernia Speaks part 1

  1. Dear Congregation Members,
I was so terribly mortified to have missed the engagement last night. When I went out for my day of Washington tourism on Sunday, I was expecting a phone call with details of location, when and where to meet transportation, etc and when I didn’t hear from anyone the night before or all day, I thought I must have misremembered and that the talk was on Monday night. My phone was working (I made some calls home) but apparently there was some problem. As the time grew closer I checked my messages (none received) and further assumed that I had misremembered the date. I was out of my hotel room (where David left messages) but had my cellphone at hand all day. When I got back to my room late last night and received his message, I was mortified beyond words. I know David has gone out on a limb to include TG women in your church’s community, and my no-show had to make everyone look bad, aside from being an inconvenience for people who came out. I was really excited about the opportunity and had words written to speak. I hope everyone can forgive me and I sincerely apologize.

  2. Umm – Calpernia seemed to cross up some info here – I am not a member of the church she went to speak at – I was just a potential interested listener. She deleted all of my comments to her on her own site –
its as if it never happened over there.
No need to post messages to her here – I don’t think she checks by here.
Best bet is to leave comments to her at her own site, calpernia.com.
